AAU Statement on Remote Work at NSCC
The Atlantic Academic Union (AAU) was disappointed to learn of the Nova Scotia government’s announcement requiring provincial civil servants to return to the workplace full-time beginning April 20, 2026.
It is not surprising that this has created concern among our members — particularly Professional Support (PS) employees whose roles may be more closely aligned with broader public sector direction. While NSCC has not communicated any decision at this time, the College has historically followed provincial directives.
In the absence of clear communication, uncertainty naturally leads to speculation. Our members deserve openness and careful, rational decision-making grounded in evidence and operational need.
Over the past several years, flexible and remote work arrangements at NSCC have proven their value. They have supported productivity and service delivery while also improving work-life balance and reducing commuting pressures. Many members have built their lives around these agreements, and any significant change would have real financial and personal consequences.
The AAU shares the concerns being raised across the public sector about abrupt shifts in policy. At the same time, we are hopeful that under Acting President Anna Burke’s leadership, there will be a meaningful opportunity to work together in a positive and collaborative way should any changes be considered. We believe decisions of this magnitude are best made through consultation and thoughtful dialogue.
We will continue to engage with College leadership and will keep members informed as soon as we have further clarity.
